How residual value drives your payment
Residual value is the single biggest lever on a lease payment. Because you only finance the depreciation during the term, a higher residual means a lower monthly payment. The residual is written into your contract as a percentage of MSRP and is not negotiable at the dealership.
Typical residual ranges
For a 36-month lease, residuals often fall between 50% and 60% for mainstream vehicles, higher for trucks and some EVs, lower for fast-depreciating luxury cars. See the by-vehicle-type page for a full breakdown.
Why the lessor sets it, not you
The residual value is not something you negotiate at the dealership; it is forecast by the leasing company using industry resale data and written into the contract before you sign. That is why two apparently identical cars can carry very different lease payments depending on the brand’s confidence in its resale value. A higher residual is good for you because you finance less of the car’s value, so checking the residual percentage is one of the fastest ways to judge whether a lease deal is strong before you commit to it.
