How the lease payment is calculated

The monthly lease payment has two parts. The first is depreciation: (net capitalized cost − residual value) ÷ lease term. The net capitalized cost is the vehicle price minus your down payment, trade-in and incentives. The second part is rent: (net capitalized cost + residual value) × money factor. The money factor is the lease equivalent of an interest rate.

Where the tax comes from

Many U.S. states charge sales tax on each lease payment rather than on the full price, so we apply the tax rate you enter to the total of the monthly payments. Other regions fold the tax into the quoted payment, which is why the international page looks different.

How to use the numbers

The calculator breaks the monthly figure into depreciation and rent so you can see where the money goes. Use it to compare dealer quotes: if the monthly payment is much higher than what the math produces from the same price, residual and money factor, ask the dealer to explain the gap. Treat the total lease cost as the bottom-line number when deciding whether the deal fits your budget.

FAQ

What is a money factor?

The money factor is the lease version of an interest rate. Multiply it by 2,400 to estimate the equivalent APR. A money factor of 0.00250 is about 6.00% APR.

What is residual value?

Residual value is what the car is worth at lease end, shown as a percentage of its MSRP. A higher residual means a lower monthly payment, because you only finance the depreciation.

Why does my monthly payment include tax?

Many U.S. states charge sales tax on each lease payment rather than on the full price. Our estimate applies the tax rate you enter to the total of the monthly payments.

Are these numbers a real quote?

No. They use example assumptions for illustration only. Always confirm the final price, money factor, residual, fees and taxes with your dealer or lender. This site is not financial advice.
